Inventory Organization 101

Inventory Organization 101

Just a week ago, I managed to win the battle between myself and my super messy inventory. It was a total chaos and I thought I would never get it done. Decluttering your inventory not only decreases load time but will also help you discover things that you thought you never had! There are tons of inventory organization posts out there but I’m gonna share with you how I did mine.

FIND A PLACE TO SORT INVENTORY

A place where you can rez objects and with less distraction.

GET YOUR STARTING INVENTORY COUNT

This is not necessary but it’s nice to know your starting count to see  how much progress you have made. To do this, open your inventory window and start typing anything in “Filter Inventory”. Doing this should display your item count above your inventory window. As soon as it’s done loading, take note of the number so you can compare it when you’re done.

MAKE A FOLDER FOR EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SORT OUT

Right click on “My Inventory” and select “New Folder” from the list. Now rename this folder “To Sort” or anything you want. Drag all the items that you need sorted out into this folder so you can have a clean starting point.

MAKE USE OF FOLDERS AND SUB-FOLDERS

This is how my inventory is set-up:

ANIMATIONS

– AO

– Dance Animations

– Poses

CALLING CARDS

I deleted everything in it.

CLOTHING

– Bottoms

– Dresses

– Ensembles

– Ethnic

– Intimates

– Outerwear/Winterwear

– Roleplay

– Rompers/Jumpsuits/Overalls

– Socks/Stockings/Leggings/Legwarmers

– Swimsuits/Beachwear

– Tops

Inside some of these folders are sub-folders that sort them further into categories like jeans, skirts, leathers, maxis… etc.

CURRENT OUTFIT

Whatever I am wearing at the moment.

GESTURES

Empty for me.

LANDMARKS

I rarely keep landmarks and I only have 5 or 6 of them. I rely on search to find places.

MY OUTFITS

I usually have 4 to 6 outfits saved. One of them would be an outfit that is on queue for blogging and the others are for quick changes.

NOTECARDS

– Blog

– The Arcade Hangul Translations

OBJECTS

– HUDs and Tools

– Miscellaneous

SCRIPTS

TEXTURES

TRASH

I empty this before I log out.

!!!MUST SORT IMMEDIATELY!!!

Whenever I go for shopping trips, I put whatever I buy in this folder to remind me that I need to sort it out asap.

OPEN 2 (OR MORE) INVENTORY WINDOWS

It is easier to sort things when you have two inventory windows. This way you wouldn’t have to scroll up and down. All you need to do is drag and drop.

UNDRESS YOUR AVATAR OR WEAR BASIC CLOTHING LAYERS

Since I am hidden up in my skybox, I prefer my avi to be butt naked when sorting out inventory so I can wear things and easily take a good look. If you do not have a private space, throw on some basic clothing layers and you’ll be good to go.

ARRANGE YOUR WINDOW IN THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE

This is my view when sorting out inventory.

My Sorting Set-up

MAKE USE OF FILTERS

Click the cogwheel near the bottom of your inventory window and select “Show Filters”. Now filter for landmarks, notecards, scripts, and animations then delete whatever you don’t need.

GO THROUGH YOUR “TO SORT” FOLDER

Drag and drop each item on your “To Sort” folder to it’s appropriate location in your new inventory set-up. If you are unsure of an item, it is best to rez it or wear it.

DELETE THINGS YOU DON’T NEED OR USE

If you have clothes, shoes, hair, etc. that you haven’t used in a long time and you think that you wouldn’t be using it in the near future – toss it in the trash.

BOX STUFF

I know, I know. Either you spent money or it has sentimental value and you can’t just throw it away. If you can’t bring yourself to delete it, box it! Rez a box, rename it, drag the item(s) to the content tab, take it back to your inventory. I have tons of stuff in boxes and I also box extra mesh sizes. For example, I usually wear XXS to S and I have a pair of pants in size XXS to XXL. Since I know that I wouldn’t be wearing anything larger than S, I box sizes M to XXL. Doing this reduced a significant amount of my inventory.

EMPTY TRASH

Make it a habit to empty your trash daily BUT, before emptying it, scan through the contents and make sure you did not delete anything important by mistake.

HIDE LIBRARY

Since you can’t really delete the “Library” folder and most of us do not use it, hide it!

– Enable “Advanced” menu (CTRL + ALT + D on Windows and Linux) (CTRL + OPT + D on Mac).

– Click “Advanced” and choose “Show Debug Settings”.

– Type “noinventoryLibrary” and select “True”.

– Close debug settings and restart.

COMPARE YOUR START COUNT AND END COUNT

Again, this is not necessary but I get a good triumphant feeling whenever I see that the number is drastically reduced.

MAINTAIN

If you do not do a good job in maintaining your organized inventory, you’ll find yourself in the exact same situation again in a few weeks. Whenever I go shopping, I make sure that I sort everything out asap so it won’t accumulate. Set a day to sort inventory at least weekly.

ORGANIZATION TOOLS

Being a blogger, I have a ton of poses. I asked plurkers how they organize their poses and Sasy Scarborough introduced me to VR Studio. It is an easy way to organize poses but I will be talking about it in a separate post.

The key to a successful inventory organization is learning how to let go of things that you don’t really need or as I said, if you can’t delete it, box it.

I hope that you have found this post helpful in some way. Happy sorting! ^_^
